President of the Estonian Cyclists' Union Mr Jaan Toots invited his colleagues Mr Girts Rorbaks from Latvia and Mr Romualdas Bakutis from Lithuania to Tallinn to discuss the common strategy of development of cycling in the Baltic region.
Mr Madis Lepajoe, Vice President of the UEC, welcomed the Presidents and congratulated them on this remarkable step towards better cooperation in the region.
Every Baltic state has its long traditions and outstanding results in different disciplines of cycling. The cycling fans can easily put together Latvia and BMX, Lithuania and track cycling, Estonia and road cycling. The Presidents were on a common opinion that it is utmost important to use more effectively the neighbours/infrastructures and learn from each other's experience.
The main points under discussion were:
- 2011 will be the year of revival of an international road stage race "The Baltic Way" which took place from 1955 to 1987;
- the BMX Baltic Cup was very well organized in 2010 and will be developed further;
- in 2012 MTB Baltic Marathon Cup series will be established;
- the new velodrome in Paneveţys (Lithuania) welcomes cyclists from Latvia and Estonia to prolong their training and competition season.
The Presidents agreed that the coordination meetings should take place regularly, at least once a year, by rotating principle and a representative of the UEC will be invited to participate.
