18-7-2011 Kern is the new European Road Champion U-23 The last hooray of the European Championships 2011 in Offida was offered by German athlete, Julian Kern who won the most important competition, the under 23 road race: Kern and four other riders broke from the group during the last of twelve laps and he ended by beating them to the finish line.

- This victory was a surprise for me too – said Kern – I was called on at the last minute and I wasn't the team captain. Actually this is my first victory of the season... just imagine how happy I am.

Two Belorussian athletes also made it to the podium, Siarhei Novikau and Kanstantin Klimiankou. Fourth was Ukrainian rider, Topchankyuk, followed in fifth place by Italian, Mattia Cattaneo. It was Cattaneo who blew the leading pack wide open, breaking away 3 km from the finish line. Among the protagonists was Italian rider, Fabio Aru, who was out on his own for the whole middle part of the race.

With this under 23 road race, the European Championships come to a close. France finished top of the 2011 medal list, followed by Italy, both with three gold medals. Then Russia, Germany, Belarus, Belgium, Luxembourg, Lithuania, Norway and the Netherlands.
