Mathias Flückiger came, saw and conquered Haifa
With a clear start-finish victory Mathias Flückiger crowned himself as the new European U23 Champion in Haifa/ Israel on July 8th. The youngest of the brothers, Mathias, won the men’s filed with a two-minute lead over Niels Wubben and a three-minute lead over his compatriot Patrik Gallati.
Mathias Flückiger, the current leader in the World Cup standings, didn't linger and went straight into attacking. He increased his lead continually, lap after lap, swiftly conquering all obstacles and had no trouble at all. Clearly he was aiming for the title and nothing else.
An exciting battle was seen for the second place. Niels Wubben, Patrik Gallati, Gerhard Kerschbaumer and many more were fighting for the top 10. During the second lap the leading group consisted of Fanger, Moorlag, Konwa and Kerschbaumer, followed by Wubben, Gallati and Litscher. Fanger took a few steps on Kerschbaumer and Wubben.
The haunting duo in lap five was consisted of Fanger and Wubben. Callati and Carabain were behind them.
The final lap was a thrilling one. Flückiger was already holding the victory in his hands. Fanger’s speed decreased, thus Wubben secured his second place, this being the first medal for Netherlands at the Championships. Carabain shake off a bit, finishing fourth, leaving the third place for Gallati. Fifth place went to Olof Jonsson.
