20-7-2010 We have new European Champions! Polish rider, Piotr Gawroński, won the title of European Champion in U23 category on the last day of the European Road Championships. Rider representing Poland achieved the best result on the 190 km long route in the capital city of Turkey, Ankara.

Despite the fact that there were many attacks from the group during the U23 race, it was suspected that the big peloton would cross the finish line. However, deciding attack took place 2 rounds before the finish. Piotr Gawroński along with 3 other riders decided to leave the peloton behind. Two of the escape managed to finish before the peloton.

Gawroński decided to attack towards the end of the race. Nelson Oliviera, Portugese, tried to follow Gawroński, who occurred to be too fast for pro-continental Xacobeo-Galicia rider. French rider, Arnaud Demare, managed to be the fastest from the group and won bronze medal.

Blaz Bogataj, Slovenia, proved to be the best rider in junior mass start race. Junior race had really unbelievable pace and, despite many attacks, finish out of the peloton decided about the podium. The route at the end of the race mounted making the riders’ task even more difficult. Slovene defeated Bryan Coquard, France, and Rafael Reis, Portugal, just on the finish line.

Golden medal in women U23 category was presented to Noortje Tabak, the Netherlands, who defeated Lesia Kalitowska, Ukraine, and Ausrina Trebaite, Lithuania. European junior Champion in mass start race became Anna Trevisini from Italy just ahead of Pauline Ferrand-Prevot and her fellow countryman, Rosella Ratto.

In U23 time trial race the best occurred to be Alex Dowsett. Silver medal went to Geoffrey Soupe, France, and bronze to Nelson Oliviera, Portugal.

European Champion in junior time trial became Anna Solowa from Ukraine. Solowa simply knocked out her rivals on 13,5 km long route. Her average speed was 45km/h which is very impressive as for 18 year-old rider. Silver and bronze medals went to France. Pauline Ferrand-Prevot lost 36 seconds to the winner and Alexia Muffat 1:15.

The first day of competition was dominated by Russian riders. Kirył Jatsewicz was the best among junior riders and Aleksandra Burczenkova was the best women under 23.

Two golden medals for Russia is a bit of surprise, even though the riders from Eastern Europe have always been famous for good time trial results, especially in junior and U23 categories.

Jatsewicz won in junior classification beating Emilien Viannet, France, by only 4 seconds and Marlen Zmorka from Ukraine by 35 seconds.

Women in U23 category raced on the same route as men. Burczenkova won by 11 seconds with Emilia Fahlin from Sweden and by 55 seconds with Katazina Sosna from Lithuania.
